Abi's Research

Hi! My name is Abi Dixon and I’m in my third year studying Biology. This summer I was able to conduct research surrounding the genetics of the lace plant, as well as work on optimizing an RNA extraction protocol thanks to the Faye Sobey Summer Research Award. Establishing an effective method for isolating good quality RNA is a necessary step for any future genetic work.

Working in Dr Gunawardena’s lab has allowed me to explore new facets of plant research, as well as indulge my love of learning in a lab environment. Dr Gunawardena’s passion for her research is infectious, and I eagerly look forwards to continuing the investigation of lace plant genetics alongside her and all the amazing lab members in the future.

Outside of the lab I enjoy baking, crocheting, and reading a good book. Most recently I’ve been working through the fantastical Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, I highly recommend! Throughout the school year, I also sing in and arrange music for the Unconscious Collective Vocal Ensemble.
